Does Your Graffiti Cleaning Company Qualify as a Small Business for the Purposes of Applying for Government Contracts?

It’s one thing to describe your company as a “small business” but it’s another thing to be considered one by the Small Business Administration (SBA). They have their own qualifications and if you want your graffiti cleaning company to qualify for government jobs, you must meet the standards set. Read on to learn more about them and then reach out to Geyser Equipment for all your pressure washing needs.

It all starts with registering in the System of Award Management

If you want to be considered for government contracts, then you must register as a government contractor in their System for Award Management, also known as SAM. Doing so requires you to self-identify and certify that you are a small business. While it won’t be verified at this point, if you incorrectly certify yourself then you could end up losing any contracts you get and could be prevented from submitting proposals in the future.

What qualifications are considered when being an approved small business?

It varies from industry to industry, but in most industries the Small Business Administration accepts that a company is a small business based on the average number of employees they’ve had over the last year, or their annual receipts over the three prior years. The small business must also meet all of these requirements:

  • It must be organized for profit.
  • It must not dominate in its field nationally.
  • It must have a physical location within the United States.
  • It must be independently owned and operated.
  • It must either operate primarily within the United States or make some type of significant contribution to our economy via taxes or by using American labor, products, materials, etc.

If your company doesn’t meet all of those requirements then we recommend you work to meet them before attempting to bid on government contracts.

Different legal forms of businesses can be small businesses

It’s a common misconception that you can’t be considered a small business unless you have a certain legal form. This isn’t true. A small business can be a sole proprietorship, a corporation, a partnership, or any other legal business form. However, when deciding if the business in question is a small business, the definition of said business may be relevant in deciding what size standards to apply.

Once you’re confident you can register as a government contractor

You’ll need to check with the SBA to learn about the size requirements for your particular business. The minimums and maximums vary based on several criteria. Once you’ve done so, and find that you’re in compliance, you can register as a government contractor. This allows you to bid on government contractors and could bring your graffiti removal company a lot of business.
