How to remove graffiti from metal surfaces

If the graffiti is very fresh then you may be able to remove it by wiping it with a common paint thinner or mineral spirits. This could include acetone, WD40, or lacquer thinner. If it is still there then you can try to remove it by scrubbing it with steel wool or bronze wool, or even light sandpaper. If it still remains then this is the time to get out a power washer and use it around 3000 PSI. This should get rid of even the most stubborn graffiti. If it does not, then it is time to paint over it.

How to remove graffiti from wood surfaces

The best-case scenario is that the wood in question is not weathered and that it has not been sealed in any way, whether with paint, stain, or sealer. If that’s the case then you can rub and wipe it down with mineral spirits. Do not do this if the wood is weathered at all, as this technique could then allow the chemicals to be absorbed which could result in the paint getting even deeper into the wood.

With wood that’s been sealed, a 3000 PSI pressure washer is the best choice. This is also a time during which the above described specialty equipment would likely work well. The only other viable option is to paint over the graffiti.

How to remove graffiti from plastic surfaces

First, try a light, penetrating oil rubbed onto the graffiti. You do not want to use a paint thinner because it can soften the plastic, which leads to clouding and permanent opaqueness. You can also try to rub it with ultra-fine steel or bronze wool. If that does not work then you will need to paint over it.

How to remove graffiti from masonry surfaces

Start with a 3000 PSI pressure washer – just make sure you are not using a narrow tip because it can etch the surface and leave an outline of the graffiti you are trying to remove. You can also try sand blasting but you will need to keep the tip moving to prevent it from permanently marking the surface. Once again, if this does not work then you will need to paint over the surface.
